Abstract

Currently, most of the steam power plant in Indonesia uses low-rank coal to feed into boiler even though its designs use high low-rank coal. This will be decreasing the performance and reliability due to all of the pulverizer must be operated. Swirl fluidized bed drying is one of the methods to upgrade the calorific value and the coal particle is fluidized by swirl flow and moisture will be reduced. The experimental method is performed using a set of swirl fluidized bed drying apparatus that using 30 guide vanes. The vanes have an angle of the guide of 10°, 20° and 30° to create a swirl flow and would fluidized coal particle in the chamber. At the inlet and outlet chamber installed a thermometer and relative humidity meter and connect to a computer to record data. The air dryer has a temperature of 55 °C, relative humidity of 10.5% and flow rate of 0.06 kg /s. The coal samples were taken periodically as much as ± 2 gram …
