2017 : Environmental Impact Assessment of Thermal Waste Processing Using Life Cycle Assessment Method

Abstract

Solid waste processed in Surabaya is using landfill disposal method, which requires massive area while the availability of land is very limited. Morover, this method produces gas emission and leachate. There is an alternative to process waste known as thermal technology which has various methods include incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis. This study aims to determine the best thermal method viewed from its environmental impact by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method using SimaPro v. 8.3 software. The waste processed by thermal method is divided into three categories: mixed waste, organic waste contains biowaste, and organic waste without biowaste. The result of this research showed that gasification with organic waste contained biowaste as raw materials became the best method with minimum environmental impact. The environmental impact results were 22,840 kg CO2 eq Green House Gas (GHG), 8.22 x 10-4 kg Chloro Fluoro Carbon (CFC)-11 eq Ozone Layer Depletion, 3.28 kg C2H4 eq photochemical oxidation, 25.8 kg SO2 eq acididifying agent and 331 kg PO4 eq eutrophication substances.
