Abstract

This research aimed to utilize waste biological sludge from wastewater treatment plant in which Extracellulary Polymeric Substance (EPS) was used as biosorbent. The EPS was extracted from biological sludge by means of heating and centrifugation. Then EPS was immobilized in Calcium alginate beads of 3-4 mm diameter. Uranium ions biosorption was carried out with batch reactor using Box-Behnken central composite design (CCD). The effect of the pH, concentration of Na2 CO3 and EDTA solutions were investigated on the desorbed U ions. The results obtained EPS dry weight (DW) 5.2 g/L, volatile dry weight (VDW) of 4.1 g/L and the ratio of VDW/DW 78.8%. The chemical EPS composed of polysaccharide 1.67 g/L EPS, protein 1.47 g/L EPS and the ratio of protein/polysaccharide 0.89.
