2021 : PENILAIAN RECOGNIZABILITY SERTA PERBAIKAN DESAIN IKON RAMBU LALU LINTAS MELALUI PENDEKATAN SMALLEST GRAPHICAL DETAIL (SGD)

This study evaluated the recognizability of twenty-eight traffic sign icons in Indonesia by measuring their response times and response accuracies and evaluating their cognitive sign features (i.e., familiarity, concreteness, simplicity, meaningfulness, and semantic closeness). The icon formats of the tested icons were image-related, concept-related, semi-abstract, arbitrary, and combination. Thirty-two participants participated in the experiment. The results showed that the response accuracy varied from 0% to 100%, while the average response times ranged from 2.49 to 9.66 seconds. The combined icons had the fastest average response time (5.92 seconds) and highest average response accuracy (58.72%). On the other side, the arbitrary icons had the longest response time (7.86 seconds) and the lowest average response accuracy (19.37%). Seven traffic sign icons with the lowest recognizability performance were then redesigned. The design improvement process considered the recognizability evaluation results, the signâ€™s cognitive features, and the Smallest Graphical Detail (SGD) principles. In the later stage of this study, the recognizability performance of these redesigned icons was assessed. The results showed a significant improvement in recognizability performance for both response time and response accuracy. Besides, the improved icon also had better cognitive sign feature ratings. These improvements would help road users recognize the traffic signs more quickly and precisely and support road safety.
