Developing green solvents with low toxicity and cost is an important issue in the pharmaceutical industry. Mixtures of low melting point organic salts composed of primary metabolites such as sugars, sugars alcohols, organic acids, and amino acids called as natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) were investigated. Galanthamine, a Narcissus alkaloid, was selected as a model. Galanthamine-HBr demonstrated greater solubility in ionic liquid and acid type of NADES while different trend was observed when it was extracted from its plant matrix. This study reveals the potential of NADES for applications involving the extraction of bioactive compounds from natural sources.
